Livin' It Up! is a semi-based "lifestyle" album from Sammy Hagar and The Waboritas. While writing with Kenny Chesney and covering Toby Keith, Sammy dialed down the energy a couple of notches here and began singing about enjoying the life of a beach dweller. It was vaguely reminiscent of Jimmy Buffett career, and Sammy even used this time as opportunity to catch more easy-going party fans as he went on a brief tour with Kenny Chesney.
Song information
- Not one to perform many covers at all, Sammy actually includes three in this release. Including the Staple Singers hit, "I'll Take You There", which Sammy somehow manages to sprinkle with enough Cabo references to warrant a new co-writing credit.
- "Halfway To Memphis" was also included on Sammy's previous studio album, Not 4 Sale, which had been plagued with enough distribution problems that the album went vastly undersold. Sammy reworked a new version here, with pedal steel guitar to meet the rest of the album's beach-cowboy aesthetic.
- "Someday" includes a pseudo-duet with Sammy's son, Aaron. The song is a re-write of a song that Sammy wrote in 1995 and occasionally performed live at Van Halen concerts.
